Preakness Stakes Cheat Sheet
This Saturday brings the second leg of the Triple Crown in horse racing to Baltimore, Maryland. The race at Pimlico Race Course is the second most attended horse race in North America, after the Kentucky Derby and like it, the winner is draped in a blanket of flowers, altered to resemble black-eyed susans, the state flower of Maryland.
The race was first run in 1873 and this will be the 143rd running of it. The course is 1 3/16 miles long and the fastest time ever was recorded by Secretariat (as in the Derby) with a time of 1:53 in 1973.
The horses must be three-year-olds and while it’s the second leg of the Triple Crown, many of the eight horses running didn’t participate in the Kentucky Derby. Favored to win though, is the winner of the Derby, Justify, who drew the No. 7 post for Saturday’s race.
The Preakness will be at 6:20pm ET.
